Basic Blackjack Strategy Guide

Master the fundamental blackjack strategy chart that reduces the house edge to under 1%. Perfect for new players.

The Foundation of Blackjack Strategy

Basic blackjack strategy is a mathematically optimal way to play every hand based on your cards and the dealer's upcard. Following it consistently reduces the house edge from around 2-5% down to approximately 0.5%.

The strategy was developed using computer simulations that played millions of hands. Every possible combination was tested to determine the statistically best action: hit, stand, double down, or split.

Hard Hands

A hard hand is any hand without an Ace, or where the Ace must count as 1. The basic rules: always hit on 8 or below, always stand on 17 or above, and double down on 11 against any dealer card except Ace.

For hands totalling 12-16, the strategy depends on the dealer's upcard. Generally, stand if the dealer shows 2-6 (they're likely to bust), and hit if the dealer shows 7 or above.

Soft Hands

A soft hand contains an Ace counted as 11. These hands are more flexible because you can't bust by taking one more card. Soft 17 and below should almost always hit or double.

With soft 18 (Ace + 7), the correct play varies: stand against dealer 2, 7, or 8; double against 3-6; and hit against 9, 10, or Ace. Soft 19 and above should always stand.

When to Split Pairs

The golden rules of splitting: always split Aces and 8s, never split 10s or 5s. Splitting Aces gives you two chances at 21, while splitting 8s turns a weak 16 into two promising hands.

For other pairs, the decision depends on the dealer's upcard. Split 2s, 3s, 6s, and 7s against dealer 2-7. Split 4s only against dealer 5-6. Split 9s against everything except 7, 10, and Ace.

Practical Tips

Never take insurance — it's a side bet with a high house edge. Avoid 6:5 blackjack tables; always look for 3:2 payouts. Practice with free games before playing for real money.

Print or save a strategy chart and refer to it while playing online. With practice, the correct decisions will become second nature.
